Copper Braid Sizes, AWG & Cross-Section Guide
Carsai manufactures custom copper braid in metric, inch and AWG-based sizes for grounding, bonding, transformers, switchgear, batteries and high-current electrical connections.
Copper braid should not be selected by width alone. Two braids with the same nominal width can contain very different amounts of copper because their wire diameter, braid density, thickness and construction are different. The most useful purchasing information is therefore the required copper cross-section together with the width, thickness, current and finished terminal design.
We can manufacture bare or tinned flat braid, continuous braid in rolls and completed assemblies with compressed ends, copper terminal plates, mounting holes and insulation. Send the required current or AWG, width, thickness, length, finish and quantity for a project-specific quotation.

How Copper Braid Sizes Are Specified
Copper braid is commonly specified in one of four ways:
- Width and thickness, such as 25 mm × 3 mm
- Nominal width only, such as 10 mm or 1 inch
- Copper cross-sectional area in square millimeters
- AWG or cable-size terminology, such as 2 AWG or 4/0
A complete specification should ideally include all relevant values. For example, “25 mm wide tinned copper braid” is not enough to confirm current capacity. The supplier still needs to know the actual copper cross-section, overall thickness, wire construction and required length.
The finished product may also need terminals. In that case, the drawing should show terminal width, thickness, hole diameter, hole spacing and plating.
Metric Copper Braid Widths
Metric widths are common in industrial electrical equipment and international engineering drawings.
Typical searches include:
- copper braid 10mm
- 10mm copper braid
- copper braid 16mm
- 16mm copper braid
- copper braid 25mm
- 25mm copper braid
- 35mm copper braid
- 50mm copper braid
These numbers normally describe the nominal flat width, not the copper cross-section.
For example, a 25 mm braid may be made in a thin, light construction for bonding or in a thicker, denser construction for a high-current connector. The width may be identical, but the amount of copper and electrical capacity can be very different.
A flexible copper braid 25mm can be supplied as roll material or converted into a finished jumper with terminals. When requesting a quotation, specify whether 25 mm refers to the braid width, terminal width or another dimension.
Smaller requests such as 2mm copper braid, 5mm copper braid, copper braid 6mm, 6mm copper braid and 6mm tinned copper braid are often used for compact grounding, bonding, shielding or light-current flexible connections.
Narrow braid requires especially clear confirmation because a width such as 2 mm may refer to a very small flat braid, a tubular braid dimension or a customer’s approximate measurement.
Inch-Based Copper Braid Sizes
Inch dimensions are widely used in the United States and in equipment drawings based on imperial units.
Common requests include:
- 1 inch copper braid
- 1 inch tinned copper braid
- 1/2 copper braid
- 1/2 tinned copper braid
- 1/4 copper braid
- 1/4 tinned copper braid
- 3/4 copper braid
Search data may omit punctuation, producing phrases such as 1 2 copper braid, 1 2 tinned copper braid, 1 4 copper braid, tinned copper braid 1 4 and 1 4 tinned copper braid. These normally mean 1/2-inch or 1/4-inch braid, but the dimension should always be confirmed before production.
The phrase 1 tinned copper braid may mean 1-inch tinned braid, although it is incomplete as a technical specification. A drawing or written confirmation should state the intended unit.
Nominal metric equivalents are approximately:
| Imperial width | Approximate metric width |
|---|---|
| 1/4 inch | 6.35 mm |
| 1/2 inch | 12.7 mm |
| 3/4 inch | 19.05 mm |
| 1 inch | 25.4 mm |
These conversions help compare widths, but they do not make two braid products electrically equivalent. The copper cross-section must still be checked.
Width, Thickness and Copper Cross-Section
A braid may be described by both width and thickness, such as copper braid 33 x 3.2 mm.
This gives useful dimensional information, but the physical envelope of a woven braid is not necessarily equal to its solid copper area. Small spaces remain between the wires, and the braid can compress or expand slightly.
Therefore:
- Width × thickness is the apparent rectangular envelope
- Copper cross-section is the actual combined metallic area
- Current capacity depends mainly on actual copper content and operating conditions
The braid specification should state whether the thickness is measured freely, under a defined compression or after terminal pressing.
A dense 33 × 3.2 mm braid may be suitable for a substantial power connection, but its final current rating still depends on conductor length, airflow, ambient temperature, duty cycle and terminal resistance.
AWG Copper Braid Sizes
Some buyers specify copper braid using American Wire Gauge terminology.
Common requests include:
- #2 braided copper wire
- 2 gauge braided copper wire
- 2 awg braided copper wire
- 4 gauge braided copper wire
- #6 braided copper wire
- 6 gauge braided copper wire
- 8 gauge braided copper wire
These terms usually ask for a braided conductor with a total copper cross-section approximately equivalent to the stated AWG size.
Common nominal solid-conductor areas are approximately:
| AWG size | Nominal copper area |
|---|---|
| 2 AWG | 33.6 mm² |
| 4 AWG | 21.2 mm² |
| 6 AWG | 13.3 mm² |
| 8 AWG | 8.37 mm² |
A braid described as 2 AWG should therefore contain an agreed copper area, but its width and thickness can vary depending on the braid construction.
The phrases #2, 2 gauge and 2 AWG are often used for the same nominal size. Nevertheless, the purchase drawing should identify the required standard and actual cross-section to prevent confusion.
1/0, 2/0 and 4/0 Braided Copper
Larger conductors are frequently described using “aught” sizes.
Typical purchasing terms include:
- 1 0 braided copper
- 2 0 braided copper
- 4 0 braided copper
- 1 0 braided copper wire
- 2 0 braided copper wire
- 4 0 braided copper wire
These normally mean 1/0, 2/0 and 4/0 AWG.
Approximate nominal copper areas are:
| Size | Nominal copper area |
|---|---|
| 1/0 AWG | 53.5 mm² |
| 2/0 AWG | 67.4 mm² |
| 4/0 AWG | 107 mm² |
Because braid geometry differs from round cable, a 4/0 braided copper conductor will not necessarily have the same outside dimensions as a 4/0 cable. It can be manufactured as a broad flat braid that fits against busbars and terminal plates.
An 1 2 inch braided copper wire request usually refers to a half-inch-wide braided conductor rather than an AWG size. This illustrates why width and conductor area must be stated separately.
Selecting Copper Braid by Current
Current is an important design input, but there is no single universal amperage for every width or AWG size.
Current capacity is influenced by:
- Actual copper cross-section
- Braid width and thickness
- Wire diameter and braid density
- Continuous or intermittent operation
- Ambient temperature
- Natural or forced cooling
- Installed orientation
- Conductor length
- Bare or insulated condition
- Terminal contact area
- Allowable temperature rise
A grounding strap may be sized for short-duration fault current, while a transformer connector may carry high continuous current. The two products require different evaluation even when their dimensions appear similar.
For large equipment, buyers may request a flexible braided copper 6300a connection. A 6300A assembly is normally not selected as one standard braid from a simple chart. It may require several large braided conductors installed in parallel, substantial terminal plates and a complete thermal and mechanical review.
For high-current projects, provide:
- Continuous current
- Peak and short-circuit current
- Current duration
- Ambient temperature
- Allowable temperature rise
- Available installation space
- Cooling conditions
- Terminal dimensions
- Number of parallel conductors
Bare Versus Tinned Braid in the Same Size
Bare and tinned copper braid can be produced with the same nominal dimensions and copper cross-section.
Tinning is mainly selected for surface protection rather than for increasing current capacity. It can improve resistance to oxidation and is commonly used in battery, marine, outdoor and humid environments.
For example, a 6 mm bare braid and a 6 mm tinned braid may share the same width, but their application environment and finish are different.
Likewise, a 1 inch tinned copper braid should be specified with the same dimensional detail as a bare 1-inch braid:
- Nominal width
- Thickness
- Copper cross-section
- Wire size
- Length
- Terminal construction
- Tin requirement
Roll Material Versus Finished Assemblies
Copper braid can be supplied in continuous rolls or as completed electrical components.
Braid in rolls
For roll supply, specify:
- Bare or tinned copper
- Width
- Thickness
- Copper cross-section
- Wire diameter if required
- Roll length
- Total quantity
Finished braided connectors
For finished connectors, also specify:
- Overall length
- Flexible length
- Terminal material
- Terminal width and thickness
- Hole diameter and spacing
- Straight, bent or offset ends
- Plating
- Insulation
- Required current
A finished braid assembly can have a narrow conductor section with wider copper terminals. Do not assume the terminal and braid widths are the same.
How to Measure an Existing Copper Braid
When replacing an existing part, measure more than the visible width.
Record:
- Braid width
- Free braid thickness
- Overall length
- Flexible length between terminals
- Terminal width and thickness
- Hole diameter
- Hole center distance
- Bare or tinned finish
- Number of parallel braids
- Equipment current rating
A clear photograph beside a ruler can support an initial review, but a dimensioned drawing is recommended for repeat production.
If possible, provide the old product’s copper cross-section or weight per unit length. These values help us reproduce the conductor more accurately than width alone.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a 25 mm copper braid always the same cross-section?
No. Products with the same width can have different thicknesses, wire quantities and copper cross-sections.
Is 1/2-inch braid the same as 2 AWG braid?
No. One describes physical width and the other describes nominal conductor area. A product can be half an inch wide without being equivalent to 2 AWG.
Can you manufacture 1/0, 2/0 and 4/0 braided copper?
Yes. These sizes can be evaluated and manufactured according to the required copper area, braid geometry, length and terminal design.
Can tinned braid be supplied in metric and inch widths?
Yes. Tinned braid can be produced in metric, imperial and customer-defined dimensions.
Can you calculate size from current?
We can review the requirement, but current alone is insufficient. Temperature, cooling, installation, length, duty cycle and allowable temperature rise are also needed.
Can you make finished straps from the selected braid size?
Yes. We can add compressed ends, terminal plates, mounting holes, plating and insulation according to drawings.
